WiFi or Wireless LAN enables users to communicate with other Wireless enabled computers or via a Wireless router to the internet or to a wired network. The most common implementation of WiFi is 802.11b or 802.11g, with supported bandwidth of 11Mbps and 54Mbps respectively. This is more than adequate for most internet access as broadband is currently at 2Mbps. However if you are transferring files between computers then 802.11g is the way to go. 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b.

You can upgrade your Toshiba laptop for wireless networking by using an external WiFi card that plugs into your laptop's PC card slot. However, for superior wireless networking performance an internal WiFi PCI card is recommended.

The advantage of the internal WiFi PCI card is an optimised antenna built into the LCD cover and lower power consumption of the WiFi device. In addition, whilst the PC Card option is cheaper, the PC Card antenna projects from the side of the laptop and damage to the card and/or the card slot is common. The internal card must be fitted by a qualified Toshiba service agent.
